> Manage your company holidays in WiseCost. The US federal holidays are preloaded, and each new timesheet starts with the holidays in its period.

WiseCost keeps a calendar of your company holidays and puts them on each new timesheet for you. Manage the calendar in **Company Setup → Company settings → Time Tracking**, in the **Holidays** card. It starts with the US federal holidays on the days they are observed, and you can add, edit or remove any date.

**Who can do this:** an Administrator.

## Before you start

Holidays are charged to your Holiday account. Enable one and set its **Time off type** to **Holiday** in the **Internal / Indirect Time** card, and make sure it is available to the employees who get paid holidays. See [Setting up time off](https://www.usewisecost.com/help/time-tracking/setting-up-time-off). Without a Holiday account an employee gets no holiday hours and the calendar does not shade for them.

## Manage the calendar

1. Go to **Company Setup → Company settings → Time Tracking**.
2. Find the **Holidays** card, next to the **Time Entry Form** card.
3. Use the year selector to switch years.
4. Click **Add holiday** to enter a date and a name, for example "Day after Thanksgiving".
5. Use the pencil to edit a holiday or the trash can to remove it, then confirm **Remove holiday**.

The first time the calendar is opened, WiseCost loads the US federal holidays for 2026 and 2027. A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one that falls on a Sunday on the Monday after. If you remove them all, the calendar stays empty.

Everyone can see the calendar: employees see it under **Company Holidays** in **My Time Off**, and approvers see it on the **Time Off Requests** page. Only administrators change it.

## What WiseCost does with the calendar

**A new timesheet starts with its holidays.** When an employee's timesheet for a period is created, WiseCost adds one entry on the Holiday account for each company holiday on a working day, Monday to Friday, described with the holiday's name.

- The hours are one fifth of the employee's expected hours per week, or 8 hours if none are set.
- Only employees who can charge the Holiday account get them.
- If the employee already has time off on that day, the holiday is not added again.
- The entries are ordinary entries. The employee can edit or delete one, for example if they worked that day.

**Changes are not retroactive.** Editing the calendar never changes entries that already exist, and a holiday you add later is not added to timesheets that were already created.

**Date pickers show the holidays.** When an employee picks dates for time off, company holidays are shaded and show their name on hover.

**Salaried employees on distributed tracking** get each holiday on its own date in Labor Distribution, and the hours come out of what their percentages distribute. See [Distributed tracking](https://www.usewisecost.com/help/time-tracking/distributed-tracking-for-salaried-employees).

## Why it matters

A working day with no entry leaves the employee's pay for that day to be spread across their contracts. Loading the holiday keeps that day where it belongs, in indirect labor, and keeps the timesheet complete for [expected hours](https://www.usewisecost.com/help/time-tracking/requiring-expected-hours).

## Common questions

### A holiday is missing from a timesheet. Why?

Check these in order: the employee has access to the Holiday account, the date falls on a Monday to Friday, the holiday was in the calendar when the timesheet was created, and the employee did not already have time off that day. A holiday added after the timesheet existed can be logged by hand on the Holiday account.

### Can an employee take a holiday as PTO instead?

In a time off request that spans a holiday, WiseCost charges that day to the Holiday account and says so in the request. The employee can choose to take it as PTO instead. See [Requesting time off](https://www.usewisecost.com/help/employees/requesting-time-off).

### Do I need to add 2028 holidays?

The calendar is loaded for 2026 and 2027. Add later dates with **Add holiday** when you need them.
